In Ghana, one in every 10 (9.9%) females and more than a quarter (26.6%) males aged 15-49 are not covered1 by any health insurance. The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) was introduced in 2003 through the National Health Insurance Act (Act 650), which was repealed and replaced by Act 852 in 2012 with the goal of removing financial barriers to health care access among the residents of Ghana.
